0 Android Malware Protection How to Avoid the Looming Android Malware Epidemic

janderson99-HubPages

Malware on smartphones has been largely ignored by most users who are unaware of the problems and their need to be vigilant in preventing infections. The amount of malicious software targeting Android smartphone system is growing daily, fed by user ignorance. Data compiled by various Antivirus firms show that Android malware, has risen about 40% in the last three months and has risen about 80% rise in the last year.

People install all sorts of apps without doing even the basic checks. People are aware of what to look for and the precautions to take to avoid malware infections on their PCs and laptops through bogus software and emails, but totally ignore the dangers on their smartphones. Its like a disease with a long incubation time that is spreading through the population because people are not taking precautions.

Many smartphone experts say the problem will grow until many more of Android customers experience all the inconvenience, frustration, and damage cause by a malware infection.

Siri on Steriods: Hacks for Remote Controls, Social Networks, Formatting, Phonetics, Symbols

Like malware on a PC once you have an infection you can spread it to your friends. Suddenly your bandwidth disappears or you have a phone bill five time your normal rate and your friends start complaining - Take precautions now before its too late. The term 'malware' includes a wide range of malicious software such as a virus, or a trojan, or anything else that does unwanted things on your smartphone.

Known Effects of Malware Infections include:

  • Sending messages without your permission to premium and expensive service SMS numbers
  • Transmit your personal data and information on the smartphone to unknown parties
  • Connecting your phone to a botnet network so that it can control your phone and execute commands remotely on your smartphone.
  • Allow others to monitor your phone calls, view your saved messages and see your text messages
  • Delude you into divulging financial information, such as birth date, account number, passwords and log in details and lots more
  • Infecting your PC if you connect to your smartphone

Why is Android More Vulnerable?

Android is more vulnerable because its open source and many players are involved - Apple owns and maintains complete control over the iPhone iOS operating system and regularly makes updates to all its customers at once, when a vulnerability is detected. Various manufacturers build Android phones, often modifying the software. Security updates are the responsibility of the carriers, not Google, and this makes the Android system much more vulnerable.

There are virtually no security checks for Android Apps - Anyone can post an infected app and other product into the Android Market or to a third-party app store. It is simply too easy to upload virtually any app. There is virtually no review system at all apart from the reviews and feedback provided by damaged users - but who reads these reviews and warnings.

Constant Upgrades to New Phones is part of the Problem - Unlike iPhones which are buy-once and use to 'end-of-life', Android customers are more likely to buy new handsets every 6-to-18 months, often switching to new manufacturers and this increases the risk that the new phone will be vulnerable to infection.

Upgraded Software has Security Improvements but its Still Vulnerable - Even after the recent release of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) that include upgraded security, such as Data Execution Prevention (DEP) and Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) the new software is still vulnerable. Various manufacturers tweak the software. Malware designers are always well ahead of the patches. Manufacturers should put much higher priority on security and users should not assume that the new software makes the software completely safe. Security advisers claim that the Android Market will probably never be as secure as the iTunes App Store. Only when Google and the manufacturers of the Android smartphones recognise the severity of the vulnerabilities will they do anything serious about it even to list known malicious Android apps.

What can Users do to Guard against Malware

Don't Blindly give Permission for Doubtful Apps - Many users blindly let Android apps access their smartphones without any check or precautions. Most users don't take the time to read and fully comprehend permission decisions. If you don't want apps to have access to your personal data, then don't install these apps and give them permission.

Lock Your Phone - so if your phone gets lost or stolen people cannot steal your personal information. If the phone is not returned to you, the person who has the phone would have to delete your personal data as part of the process of restoring everything to its factory settings and defaults.

Use a Secure Network - All transactions that involve personal information should never be made on an insecure network. Treat free Wi-Fi connections very warily and they are the source of many infections and they are many ways of tricking you into divulging your private data.

Only Install Trusted Apps - Only install applications from trusted companies or which pass the 'review before download' test. Always locate and carefully read the reviews of the app to ensure there are no security issues that apply to it or related apps from the same company. Only download apps from 'known' developers. If the app is new or from an unknown developer always do a quick check via Web search for both the developer and the name of the app. If the app is new - wait until reviews or information is available. Its not worth the risk.

Log Out Frequently - Keep your log-in information and passwords off your phone, and change them frequently. Always log out quickly every time you finish an online banking transaction or anything else that involves your personal data. This terminates the session and does not leave your the username and password exposed.

Install Mobile Security Software - There are various security apps available that offer virus protection and can detect and quarantine various types of malware. Packages from anti-virus companies such as Norton and McAfee can also be purchased. Up until recently, most Free Anti-malware Apps for Android were not very effective. A recent review showed that Only Zoner Anti-Virus Free showed relatively acceptable performance, with malware detection effectiveness of about 32%. Read the reviews and get a good one. Always check the reviews before investing in these protective apps to make sure they work.

Stick to the Default Software - Smartphones with factory settings have the lowest risk, and as soon as anything is changed the risk of intrusion increases. unlocking a phone or jail-breaking can increase the vulnerability.

Beware of unknown text Messages - As for emails, viruses and malware can be embedded within, or linked to, text messages. When opened, the malware can infect a mobile device. As for emails be very careful with any text from an unknown number, especially if the number looks suspicious or invalid simply delete the message without opening it.

Always check and Listen to User Reviews and Warnings - Other users may let you know if they are aware of problems with an app, including potential malware. If you know of any problems yourself then post information about it. Web searches are a very good way of checking for potential problems. If in doubt don't use the app.

For this sometimes they forget or misuse the fundamentals of mobile application development that make actually good for nothing though it is not too hard to make a successful mobile application. This article covers many useful tips that will help an application developer to make a successful application

Designing apps using responsive web design

Responsive web design can be the best solution of the problems facing during the apps developing. It is a kind of web design which deals with both cross browser and cross platform compatibilities. Web developers make code for desktops, handheld PCs, and Smartphone. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is that type of device in which responsive web design is used. This device tries to combine all Android powered Smart phones and tablet PCs.

Do not ignore fragmentation

Android developers only had an option to build two layouts in a screen before so that the OS could select the most suitable of them. But still it is not a solution of the question of fragmentation. Let the first impression of icon last long

The Google play has thousands of mobile apps but all the apps are not equally popular. To make an app popular a developer has to keep in mind that first impressions of icon last long. So to make successful app a developer must have to make an attractive icon for the app. If the icon of the app is becoming attractive the users will show more and more interest about that app.

1 Android 18(Dragon Ball Z Profile)

Android 18

This is Android 18, one of Dr. Gero's androids and the only female android. She is the twin sister of Android 17. She was once a major antagonist, but eventually became a Z-Fighter upon meeting Krillin, her future husband.

Android 18's appearance is that of a white-skinned, beautiful young woman. She is the 18th creation of the mad scientist Dr. Gero, who wishes nothing more than the destruction of Goku. Android 18 along with her brother Android 17, used to be ordinary teenagers, until they were abducted by Gero and turned into androids. As an android, she retains her memories as a human, and she's granted extraordinary strength and power that exceed that of an average Super Saiyan's. During her battle with Super Saiyan Vegeta, she demonstrated her amazing strength by easily overwhelming him without taking the fight seriously. She ultimately landed a kick that dislocated Vegeta's arm. Afterwards, she left with the other androidsand headedto Goku's location but before leaving the crippled Z-Fighters, she gave the terrified Krillin an unforgettable kiss, which the young man would never stop thinking about.

After Cell's defeat, the heroes gathered the Dragon Balls to start wishing the people that were killed by Cell back to life. During this time, Krillin had the opportunity to make one wish, which he would use to turn Android 17 and 18 into human beings. However, the dragon refused to perform the wish, as it was beyond the dragon's powers, so Krillin instead wished for the bombs in 17 and 18's bodies to be removed, which the dragon granted without a problem. Android 18 thanked Krillin by saying that he couldn't win her heart just by making a wish to help her. Eventually, she accepted Krillin's love and they had a daughter named Marron.

Power Level

During Android 16, 17, and 18's activation, they were the most powerful creatures in the series. They easily knocked the Z-Fighters out in their next meeting without exerting any obvious effort.

Android 18 was the weakest of the three androids. Although weaker than the other two androids, her powers were still greater than Super Saiyan Vegeta's. For some unknown reason, 18 and the other androidswere built with unlimited energy supply, as none of them would ever tire in a battle and they have the ability to fire energy blasts forever. In addition, 18 never ages. In Dragon Ball GT, Krillin already looks like a grandfather and 18 looks as young as ever.Android 18 fought Vegeta in his new Super Saiyan state and she easily crippled him by delivering a powerful kick that severed Vegeta's arm, rendering it useless. She was able to handle multiple Z-Fighters including two Super Saiyans at once and easily defeat them without even getting touched in any part of her body. However, it was until the introduction of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber that a number of Z-Fighters started to surpass the androids, but even before that, Piccolo had already surpassed Android 18 after hemerged with Kamias he was fighting an even match against Android 17, who was then slightly stronger than his sister. After Vegeta and Trunks gained the ability to transform into Ascended Saiyans andemerged from the Time Chamber, the remote control that Bulma made to deactivate the androids was no longer necessary as either Vegeta or Trunks could destroy them if they were to wreak havoc again. During the Majin Buu Saga, almost all the Z-Fighters that 18 dominated during the Android Saga had pretty much surpassed her. Nevertheless, 18 is still stronger than the villains from the past such as Frieza and Cooler.

0 Android Mobile Phone Tethering App

Internet Tethering and modem use

Smart phones are very smart indeed. With the right App, mainly on the Android operating system your smart phone can be used for Internet tethering i.e. as a wireless 3G modem / Gateway to the web from your laptop (or PC) You will be able to normally surf the net on your laptop through the phones 3G connection, thus being a little slower than a normal fixed connection.

There may be times when your internet connection at home or your office is temporarily down and connection to the net is very important. Many people nowadays have Smartphones however they are not as efficient as a desktop PC.

How modem tethering works

The best App to use is for Internet tethering is PDAnet and I tested this using the HTC. This should be free from the Android store. You will also need to download the software for your PC. It is very straight forward to set up and your Android phone doesn't even need to be hacked or anything.

Once set up your will be able to use the Android as a modem and connect to the Internet as normal, it will connect through 3G/Wifi even VPN. Very useful in a cafe.

Some phone services e.g. Docomo in Japan can detect Internet tethering and may bill you extra on top of any "All you can use" packages so beware. If may be a good idea to check with your phone network, I understand that some allow you to tether for free. Tethering does use a lot of power however since you are connected via USB, your phone is charging at the same time. Some models may heat up a lot.

Recent smart phones actually have tethering functionality built in with the firmware. Some phones can even be used as a HotSpot however this tends to drain the battery at an excessive rate so it is better to plug the charger in at the same time.

Increase Google Android Phone Memory (And Speed) With a Few Simple Apps

Google's Android operating system is fast becoming the world's favorite choice when it comes to cell phones. Most Android phones are fast, fun and reliable. Many people love Android phones for their sleek looks, hundreds of thousands of free applications and the ability to do things no other phones can do. Once your Google Android phone is no longer the newest and best on the market (a few months is all it takes!), users can begin to see major computational slow downs and even the inability to download any more apps because their phone memory is gone. This can even lead to your phone being unable to receive text and picture messages! This brief tutorial will help you get your phone back in working order and get you back to the apps you love!

Fix Your Ailing Android Phone or Tablet

Clear Up Your Phone Memory to Increase Speed and Space

First thing first: get the tools you need to fix your Android phone's memory problems. Visit the Google Play store (formerly Android Market) and find a free "one tap cleaner" and an app that will move applications to your memory card. I do not necessarily intend to endorse any one app or name, but the applications I use for this are 1 Tap Cleaner Free and App 2 SD Free. There are many more to choose from. Some cost money but many are free. If you do not have the available memory to download these apps, you will need to delete some of your other apps. Delete Facebook if you have to. You can download it again later! You can do this by going to your "Settings" menu, scroll to "Applications" or its equivalent on your Android phone and open it, then open "Manage Applications". Here you can delete apps to clear up some space for your memory cleaning applications. Just select one of your applications (make sure you recognize the application, deleting Android system files can damage your phone!) then choose "Uninstall", then confirm that you wish to uninstall the app. While you're in a deleting mood and still in the "Settings" menu, check your memory card's available space. Make sure you have at least 200 megabytes free. Two or three gigabytes is even better.

Now that your phone is ready to accept new applications, download the above mentioned cleaner and application moving apps if you haven't already. First open the cleaner application. Find the cache cleaner and select it. Follow any prompts that may open and allow the application to clear your application cache. Apps like Facebook, Messaging, Email and Google Play can have up to 100 megabytes of unnecessary cache, maybe even more. If you don't mind erasing your calling history and messaging history (texts and picture messages), open the text and call clearing option in the cleaner app. Some may not have this option, but 1 Tap Cleaner Free does. Now that you have cleared up to 100 megabytes or more, click the "Home" button to close the cleaner app. Next locate and open the application moving app. Select the option that allows you to move applications to your SD card. App 2 AD opens by default to this screen. Select any applications that appear on this list and click "Move to SD". Wait a few moments for the operation to complete, then press the "Back" button. This button is a curved arrow on the bottom of the phone on most Android phones. Continue the previous steps to move all of the applications that you are able to move to your SD card. If you have never done these operations before, you will probably have 300 to 500 megabytes of newly created free space on your phone's memory!

Continued Maintenance for Your Google Android Phone or Tablet

Repeat all of the above steps occasionally to ensure your Android phone stays in the best operating state possible. Remember many of your applications update automatically without your knowledge. This can lead to more unnecessary cache memory usage. Some apps have even been known to move themselves back onto your phone memory! You are now on your way to downloading new and better applications with a lot more free phone storage space than ever before.

0 Android and the Open Source Revolution

See all 3 photos Source: MIKI Yoshihito, (CC BY 2.0), via flickr

The Open Future

Android has been steadily gaining market share ever since it was first released. One of the biggest reasons for this popularity is the fact that Android is open source. Open source means that the source code is free to be used by anyone. It also means code is shared within the community for the benefit of everyone. Android is more than just an operating system. It is a community of device manufacturers, software developers--both private and volunteer, and end users all working together to create something bigger than themselves. This community even includes big names like Google, Samsung, and HTC.

Android is for Everyone

Google, Samsung, and HTC are constantly releasing their source code "into the wild" which allows developers, both private and volunteer, to work on improving Android. Android also shares code with Linux which is the original source of Android. Since both Android and Linux are open source, code is shared both upstream and downstream. Android benefits from Linux development and Linux benefits from Android development. These relationships work because Android is open source which means that anybody is free to use the code as they see fit. That is why you see Android devices manufactured by Samsung, Amazon, Google, Sony, HTC, Motorola, LG, Huawei, Dell, Toshiba, Acer, and Asus just to name a few. There are thousands of different Android devices, with dozens of different manufacturers and carriers supporting Android. However, tech giants like Google, Samsung, and HTC aren't the only ones contributing to Android.

Socially Built Operating System

Communities of developers such as the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), CyanogenMod, XDA, and MIUI also contribute source to Android. The AOSP version of Android is built and maintained by the community. It is sort of a "socially" built operating system. Many of the features of Android that you see on your smartphone came from AOSP like the dialer and the text message app. Another great example is the the 3D Gallery that runs on some of the Samsung phones. Development also works in the other direction.

The release of source code by Google, HTC, and Samsung also allows the development community to transfer Androids latest features to some of its older phones. An example of this can be seen where people are running the new "Touchwiz Nature UX" from the Samsung Galaxy SIII on the Galaxy SII. This is the power of open source.

Critics of Open Source

Android is not without critics. Competitors like Apple and their supporters have criticize Android for being unpolished, fragmented, and for a lack of support. Critics say that Apple iOS is better because it "just works". Android is often portrayed as experimental and broken. Another criticism is that Android is not unified and that too many devices are running different version of Android. There is also criticism aimed at manufacturers and carriers for not providing enough support and updates. Many of these criticism are not unwarranted. Even the biggest supporters of Android like Google admit to the problem of fragmentation. So how does fragmentation start?

A Soft Problem and A Hard Problem

Android's problems stem from their rapid development cycle. As Google releases source code too fast different developers are able to keep up at varying rates. This leads to fragmentation as some developers stay up to date with Google's release cycle and some fall behind. In turn, fragmentation puts added strain on development teams as they struggle to provide support for different versions of Android simultaneously. As development teams fall behind it becomes difficult for them to release updates since they are also trying to maintain older versions of Android at the same time. Google is addressing this problem by shifting their development focus.

Starting with Android 4.1 Jellybean, Google is slowing the release cycle of new Android versions to about one release per year. This will allow handset developers like HTC to catch up to the current version of Android. Reducing the number of releases will also allow both the Google developers and the rest of the community to shift the focus from developing new versions to stabilizing the current version. This developmental shift should also make it easier for manufacturers and carriers to provide updates as well technical support. As mentioned above most of Androids problems are software and this can all be fixed with development--through the release of updates and patches.

The problems that Apple have are hardware problems. They release phones that are technologically inferior. There are Android phones with quad-core 1.5 GHz processors. The iPhone 4S only has a dual-core 1 GHz processor. If you have an iPhone 4S then there is nothing you can do to solve this problem since there is nothing to upgrade to. There are Android phones that have 4G LTE modems. The iPhone 4S does not. There are many Android phones with a 4.3 inch screen while the iPhone 4S has a 3.5 inch screen. The best Android phone have 2 GB of RAM yet the iPhone 4S only has a quarter of that. The iPhone 4S does not have a removable battery nor does it have a micro SD card slot. Almost all of the Android phones have both. Apple's "The New iPad" has a dual-core 1 GHz processor and cost between $500 and $700 while Google's Nexus 7 has a quad-core 1.5 GHz processor and cost $199. The fact that Apple's hardware is substandard is a problem that cannot be fixed unless you switch to Android or wait another year for the next iteration of the iPhone or iPad. The only problem with waiting is that these devices are likely to be technologically obsolete on launch day just like its predecessors.

Android vs Apple

Android represents a change in the way people will relate to the operating system on their devices. People will become both consumer and producers of the operating system. Android is built by a community that includes handset developers, software developers, and the open source community. Android is the more inclusive operating system. Android includes the richest companies in the world like Google and Amazon as well as volunteers who do it for fun and want nothing more than a donation to their beer fund.

Android is the opposite of Apple. Where Android is open and inclusive, Apple is elitist and exclusive. Where Android develops and shares with everyone, Apple develops and sues everyone. Where Android is community developed and open, Apple iOS is internally developed, proprietary, and closed.

It will be difficult for Apple to compete against the rest world. They are only one company competing against an alliance of the worlds largest technology companies as well as the smartest and brightest minds of the open source community. The irony of this is the Android open source community includes people who are the original developers of Linux. Linux is the same source that Apple is building upon, yet they took that source closed it and are now selling it. This is not just a battle of Apple versus Android--it is a battle of competing philosophies. This is a battle between market or private driven software development versus open or community driven software development.

Do You Think Android is the Future of Gadgets?

To answer the original question posted by vinner, "Do you think Android is the future of gadgets?"

Android is the now of gadgets.

The data shows this to be true. There are more Android users than there are iOS users and this has been true for a while now. Everyday over a million Android devices are activated and today there are over 400 million activated Android devices world-wide. There is also no indication in the data that this trend is going to change. Android is built for the future both in its philosophy and in its hardware. Android software was founded on the principle of openess which allows the software to grow and evolve to fits the needs of the users. This idea is reflected in its hardware as well. The latest Android devices are built with hardware that are powerful enough to run tomorrow's software. You can see in the first video a Samsung Galaxy SII running software from the new Galaxy SIII.

0 An Overview of Smartphone Operating Systems: iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Blackberry, WebOS, & Symbian

Mobile Smartphone with Apple iOS

Overview:

Current trends in both personal and enterprise computing clearly show that mobile services and devices will continue to play a large role how we as users and businesses will create, consume, and communicate in the future.

For those readers that are not familiar with the mobile world, I want to provide a brief overview of the main mobile operating systems that are on the market today. I've grouped the operating systems into two categories; "Leaders" and "Wild Cards". The "Leaders" are proven and are continually gaining users in the expanding mobile market.

The "Wild Cards" basically fall into two sub-groups - potential challengers to the "Leaders" or legacy operating systems that are still around but are basically losing market share instead of gaining market share.

The Leaders:

Apple iOS:
iOS is Apple's mobile operating system that is used for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. It really is the gold standard for mobile operating systems in my opinion. It offers a sleek user interface, intuitive navigation, and reliable operations. At the time of this writing it has approximately 17% of the mobile market share, behind Android and just about tied with Nokia's Symbian operating system (discussed later in this article.)

Although Apple iOS is not the market leader in terms of market share, it has a loyal following, a strong brand, and is gaining market share. Apple iOS distributes it mobile apps through theApple app store, one of the leading mobile app markets along with Android.

Android:
Android is the popular mobile operating system developed and owned by Google. Even though the consensus shows that Android lags behind Apple iOS in usability and reliability, it does offer some significant advantages over Apple. One of the main advantages is that is is available on a multitude of devices, including smartphones, e-readers, and tablets developed by Samsung, Acer, Lenova, HTC, and others (just to name a few).

Android currently is the market leader with over 50% of the market. Android's popular app market, the Android Marketplace has thousands of apps available and has a similar number of registered users as Apple's App Store.

The WildCards:

Windows Phone/Windows Mobile:
Windows Phone is Microsoft's latest mobile operating system, dubbed Windows Phone 7. Its precursor, Windows Mobile is still being used on many legacy mobile devices. Microsoft is making a big bet on Windows Phone in its attempt to steal market share away from both Apple iOS and Android. Their recent strategic partnership with Nokia underlines this fact that both Microsoft and Nokia are setting their sights on the large mobile consumer market.

Windows Phone and Windows Mobile currently has less than 5% of the mobile market share, although this is expected to grow as more devices are being delivered with the Windows Phone operating system installed on it. Windows Phone distributes its apps through theWindows Marketplace.

WebOS:
WebOS is Hewlett-Packard's open-source mobile operating system. WebOS was acquired by HP through its acquisition of Palm. After WebOS was released by HP in 2011, the operating system had a short run after never really gaining market share. It was released with HP's TouchPad tablet and Veer smartphone in 2011.

Since then, HP has decided to abandon their push into the mobile tablet and smartphone market and is planning on making the operating system available to the open-source community. WebOS has only a small share of the mobile market (<1%).

Symbian:
Symbian is Nokia's legacy mobile operating system developed in partnership with Accenture. It has historically been a very popular mobile operating system worldwide but in recent years has been losing market share to both Apple iOS and Android.

Through Nokia's strategic partnership with Microsoft, most future mobile devices will be shipped with Microsoft Phone on Nokia devices (continuing on more models throughout 2012). Although Symbian still holds approximately 17% of the market share, that will continue to decline as more Nokia mobile devices are shipped with Windows Phone.

Blackberry OS:
Blackberry OS is Research in Motion's (RIM) mobile operating system. It is offered on all Blackberry smartphones and the RIM's Playbook tablet. It has approximately 12% of the mobile market share. It once held over 20% of the market share at its peak, mainly through enterprise customers, but has slowly been losing market share to both Android and Apple iOS as more and more enterprise users have been switching over to more consumer based models.

Only time will tell if the Blackberry and its operating system will make it. They have had a very rough time recently, but still have a large and loyal customer base and a large portfolio of patents that may keep them afloat.

In Conclusion:

There are many mobile operating systems on the market today with two of them carrying the momentum - Apple iOS and Android. Microsoft Phone is the real wildcard of the bunch. With its recent partnership with Nokia and the upcoming release of Windows 8 for tablets, Microsoft appears to be positioned to take away market share from the leaders of the pack.

With WebOS's recent transition into the open source community, it looks like it will be more of a niche operating system in the near future. It appears that Symbian will continue to slowly lose market share as Nokia pushes out more phones with Windows Phone installed on them. If Research in Motion is able to stop their slide and develop a strong product that can compete with the other large players they may be able to turn their slide around, but only time will tell the true story.
