0 Android phones with Dual SIM

See the list of Android phones with Dual SIM available in the market. Even though new options like number portability came, most of us still have at least two SIM in active use. So far there was not much selection for dual SIM phones when it comes to Android smartphones. But now there is a considerable variety of dual sim android phones to choose from. The price range varies from 3K to 16K

The main distributors of dual SIM phones were Spice and Micromax. In case of Android phones also they are the ones with more models. See Android phones with dual SIM phones below

Spice MI 270 cheapest dual SIM android phone
See all 8 photos Spice MI 270 cheapest dual SIM android phone

Spice Mi-270 (Rs. 3600)

Currently it is the cheapest Android dual SIM phone available in the market. It runs on a 600MHz processor common in low end Android smartphones. It is dual SIM standby phone (both GSM). This phone is running on Android 2.2.

The main point that we should consider about this phone is that, it offers all the features that you can find in smartphones. It comes with wifi, GPS, Android, a good processor, 2MP camera etc.

The touch screen of this phone is 2.8 inch resistive touch screen. So touch response will be poor. The resolution of 240x320 is common in low end smartphones. The battery of 1000mAh is poor. It is not capable of powering a dual SIM smartphone for a very long time. Charging daily will become a must.

Micromax Superfone Ninja A50
See all 8 photos Micromax Superfone Ninja A50

Micromax Superfone Ninja A50 ( Rs.4900)

It is one of the latest dual SIM Android phones available in India. As it is the latest it offers some features that you can find only in high priced previously released phone. The main attraction of this phone is the customized personal digital assistant app 'AISHA' in the phone. Micromax is advertising the phone, showing this app in the front. It runs on a powerful 650Mhz processor. 3.1 inch capacitive screen with resolution 240x320 offers clear images in a responsive screen. 2MP camera is also good enough at this price. Internal memory of the phone is only 200MB, but Android version 2.3 Gingerbread offers installation of apps in memory card. Battery of 1200mAh is also enough to support the phone for one day.

Spice MI 280
See all 8 photos Spice MI 280

Spice MI 280 (Rs. 5300)

It is another low budget Android phone, from Spice with dual SIM facility. It is a very good phone with very good features, in which we cannot find any drawbacks except in the low capacity battery.

It is running on a 650MHz processor with Android 2.3. The 2.8 inch capacitive screen is of good response as it is of capacitive technology. Also the resolution of 240x320 is common in this price range. The primary camera of 3.2MP is of moderately good quality.

An excellent feature about this phone is that, there is a secondary camera of 0.3MP allowing you to make video call. It is not common in Android phones priced below 10k. Battery is the only drawback. It is of 1000mAh. Which is less that average. When it coming to powering two SIMs, intervals between charges will become small

iBall ANDi
See all 8 photos iBall ANDi

iBall ANDi (Rs.6300)

This phone is from iBall, trying to get their grip in Indian market in smartphones. But ANDi is a phone with a very low capacity processor. It runs on a 416MHz processor and Android 2.2. Many users are complaining that the phone is hanging once you have open two or three apps. 3.2 inch capacitive screen is responsive enough. But the 1000mAh battery is of not enough capacity to run this large screen and two SIMs for long time.

3MP camera is also not bad. But the lack of a good processor is a killing drawback, as you cannot find a processor of capacity less than 600MHz in Android phones. But excluding this it has the power of Android and dual SIM. Also all the features that make a phone smart like wifi connectivity, GPS etc are available in this phone also

Spice MI 350n
See all 8 photos Spice MI 350n

Spice Mi350n (Rs. 7800)

This is another very nice phone from Spice offering you a secondary camera and dual SIM feature. It posses a 3.5 inch capacitive touch screen. Its higher resolution(320x480) compared to similarly priced phone lets its display stand out. 3.2MP Primary camera is auto focus also. Also the presence of 0.3 MP secondary camera make video calling possible.

Its battery capacity is also considerable. 1400mAh is enough compared to 1000mAh of other similar phones. So in an outer look you cannot find any drawbacks in this phone. The only thing that you may not like is the brand Spice. But feature wise there is no phone in any price near to it.

Micromax superfone lite A75
See all 8 photos Micromax superfone lite A75

Micromax superfone Lite A75 (Rs.8900)

It is the competitor of Spce Mi35n. Features are almost the same. It also offers a secondary camera of 0.3MP and dual SIM facility. 3.75inch capacitive touch screen is of resolution 320x480 which is above average in this price range. Overall phone build quality is also more good and phone is more stylish also.

Processor is of 650MHz and it runs on Android 2.3. Primary camera of 3MP with LED flash is of good quality. It posses a RAM of 256MB, which provides multitasking features. Battery of 1300mAh is also adjustable. Anyway for all smartphones you will have to charge daily. The phone comes with a lot of pre installed apps, which cannot be removed even if you do not want it. But as app installation to memory card is possible it isn't a serious problem

LG Optimus net Dual p698
See all 8 photos LG Optimus net Dual p698

LG Optimus Net Dual P698 (Rs.10500)

It can be considered as a perfect Android dual SIM phone from the reliable brand of LG. So far there was phones of Spice and Micromax. But LG is considered as more reliable as a phone manufacturer. Moreover the features of the phone are also promising. It comes with a 800MHz processor and 512MB of RAM and ROM. So performance and multitasking will be superb.

Camera is 3MP with autofocus. The display of 320x480 resolution and 3.2 inch capacitive screen is above average in this price range. Also the battery of 1500mAh is also capable of delivering enough power for a dual SIM phone for a long time. So overall it is just a superb Android dual SIM phone in which you cannot find any flaws

Motorola milestone XT 800
See all 8 photos Motorola milestone XT 800

Motorola Milestone XT800 (RS.16000)

It offers dual SIM feature with both GSM and CDMA. So if you have both of these active SIMs , this phone seems like the only option available. But it comes with an average processor of 550MHz processor only. But as there is a separate graphics processor, video and gaming performance will be of good quality and processor power can be used entirely for non graphics purpose. So even this processing capability enables the phone to work really fast.

Camera in this phone is just superb. This 5MP auto focus camera with 720p HD recording offers you superb images. The display of 3.7inch capacitive screen of resolution 480x854 offers crystal clear display. Also you can play 720p HD videos in the phone. So enjoying movies in the phone will be easy.

It runs on Android 2.1, which does not allow you to install apps in memory card. But the presence of 1GB internal memory solves the problem. The battery of 1400mAh is of average capacity only, as you are paying double amount of most of the other phones listed above, it is not wrong to expect more battery capacity.

0 Android Customization: Making It Yours

Vanilla Android 2.3 homescreen.
See all 3 photos Vanilla Android 2.3 homescreen.

One of the things that distinguishes Android is its vast flexibility. Whereas with other phones, and iPhones especially, you need to fiddle around with the software, jailbreak, hack - with Android you can make your phone just the way you like it and make it your very own. No two Android phones need to have screens that look remotely the same: there are even themes and apps that let you mimic the looks of iPhones and Windows Phone 7 if you want to!

You will need these to start with.

  1. Custom launcher
  2. Various widgets
  3. Custom lockscreen
  4. Wallpaper Set & Save (to automatically fit an image as a wallpaper without you needing to crop/resize it)

Custome Launcher/Home Replacement

The bread and butter of this process. Android allows you to replace almost everything that comes with the standard software package: you can change the keyboard, use a third-party browser, or replace the Android launcher with something else entirely. What's the launcher? It's the app through which you interact with your phone - where you launch other apps and place shortcuts. It's just like the desktop on your PC or laptop only smaller.

Pictured above is what Android 2.3 generally looks like out of the box. Now look down and you will see homescreens that look completely different - so much so that you can be forgiven if you think they aren't even running Android! They are a result of thorough user customization, each owner making the phone exactly tailored to their specific uses.

Various Android homescreen designs.
See all 3 photos Various Android homescreen designs. Launcher 7 for Android
See all 3 photos Launcher 7 for Android

How do you do this? The first thing you will need is a custom launcher, made by third-party developers. Here are some of the most prominent and high-quality ones.

  • ADW EX Launcher - paid ($3). One of the older, most innovative and highly flexible launchers, with more options than you can shake a stick at and a huge variety of themes.
  • Launcher Pro Plus - paid ($3.5). Polished, with a set of its own widgets for calendar, agenda, contacts and facebook, plus options for transition animations.
  • SPB Shell 3D - paid ($15). The priciest of them all, this distinguishes itself with flashy 3D effects and animations.
  • HeLauncher - free. Shares many features with ADW EX and Launcher Pro, with the extra option of mimicking proprietary interfaces by HTC, Samsung, and Motorola.
  • GO Launcher EX - free. Good range of features and themes.
  • Launcher 7 - free. One of the many launchers that mimic the elegant "Metro UI" tiles of Windows Phone 7 but, in true Android fashion, offers more customization than the real thing and retains the flexibility of Android.

Widgets

Now that you have picked your launcher, it's time to look for widgets to go with it. What are widgets? They are mini-apps that allow for something close to multi-tasking on a desktop, presenting nuggets of information at a glance without making you launch an app. The ones that are best for customization are:

  • Desktop Visualizer - make your own widgets! This app lets you turn any image file into a widget, and let you choose what to launch from the image.
  • Minimalistic Text - text widget: any text. Put whatever message you like onto your homescreen, or have an elegant text-based presentation of battery percentage, weather, time and date.

You will probably want to look into battery, weather/time, and media widgets too, like:

  • Pure Music Widget - flexible themeable widgets for your music player.
  • Beautiful Widgets - highly customizable, themeable widgets for time/date and weather.
  • Colorize Widget - a widget suite with calendar, agenda, facebook, twitter timeline widgets and more.

Once you have picked out widgets you fancy, it might be a good idea to try out a custom lockscreen too: WidgetLocker is the one that lets you freely turn your lockscreen into another homescreen, allowing you to customize it freely so you can add any widgets you want onto it.

0 Cool and Useful Apps for Android Smartphones and Tablets [Part One]

Let's talk about Android a bit. The highly acclaimed operating system for phones and tablets has gained wide success among users and basic reason why is because there is a huge selection of applications which can be found online. Any user can customize his portable device to his personal standards by grabbing applications from Google Play or from other websites which offer such software.
But just another article mentioning random apps which need to be bought?

Not really, because all applications which will be mentioned here are free and guaranteed to work flawlessly. I have personally tested all these (on two Android smartphones) and I am very satisfied with them. I am pretty sure that you will like most if not all of the apps I will mention, but even if you don't, then there's always an uninstallation option, right?

Antivirus Free is the mobile version of the world's most downloaded antivirus for computers, AVG Free. There are not many viruses for mobiles yet (this however, as professionals say, is about to change soon), but some users will surely find it better to protect themselves beforehand, just in case. AVG will work well and fast, will implement to the menus of the phone and will showcase some serious enemy to any malware that might find its way in your device. A really good and relatively good choice for any Android device.

Android Lost is a free application which will prove to be very useful if you ever lose your phone, but if it is stolen, too. User can install this on the phone and then can gain access remotely to the device through Internet browser. If the phone is misplaced and silent, setting it to vibrate for some time will show a hint to its owner as to where it is "hiding". If vibration cannot do the trick, then there are advanced options, like setting the alarm to ring bypassing silent mode. If the phone has been stolen, the owner can set the phone to take pictures, connect to GPS and send its location to the owner's e-mail address, and even more. Bad news for thieves, right?

Airdroid is simply awesome; it offers a truly remarkable wireless experience, because it allows file transferring, access to the phone's data and more, right through an internet browser. No more USB cables needed, because now user can move files between phone and computer wirelessly through a secure way. Of course, it takes a Wi-Fi wireless network on which both the computer and the smartphone must be connected.

Smart RAM Booster is my personal choice of an app that will clear up the memory from applications leftovers. Through a simple widget, the user can click the icon and the phone will recover unused RAM fast and efficiently. This will generally allow the smartphone to handle memory usage more effectively and can make multitasking on smartphone a much more interesting experience.

A Comic Viewer is just what its title says; comics fans can use this app to read their favorite comics through their portable device. It is simple to use, but does not lack advanced features.

Aldiko Book Reader is my personal selection of an e-book reader for Android. I like its interface, because it resembles a real library and shows the gallery of books with their own covers, making it easy to find the book I am looking for. navigation through pages couldn't be easier and the app itself is steady. What more is there to ask?

Cut The Rope is a game that can be quite fun to play and requires strategy and speed at the same time.

Live365 application can offer loads of radio stations streaming from allover the world. Coming from a top radio stations website (www.live365.com) it is fast and reliable and offers a huge number of radio stations of all different music genres. You will not have problem in finding your favorite stations with this impressive app and you can even set them to be your top stations if you have registered a free account at their website. Navigation and streaming speed are more than sufficient, but beware if your phone is on data plan because streaming radio can total to many MBs of usage. I personally use it on Wi-Fi only.

MapFactor Navigator is a free GPS navigation application with maps coming from many countries of the globe. Based on experience, some countries do not have very detailed maps, but the basics are there and the app itself makes up for it with some great graphics and interface and with its easy way in searching for streets or places of interest. If you do not want to pay for a premium GPS navigator such as NDrive or Sygic, MapFactor is the best choice for you.

Please feel free to add your own selection of Android apps in the comments or argue with my own.

The Great Debate

These days it is hard to choose which smartphone you should get. We are spoiled for choice and often it is hard to determine which is easier or better. This article, I hope, will help you decide which phone type you should go for. This particular article takes into account only iOS (the iPhone & iPad operating system) and Android. Windows Phone 7 (WP7) and Blackberry are not taken into account because 1) both are not as popular as iOS and Android and 2) I don't know as much about WP7 & Blackberries.

iOS 6 Demo

Android 4.0 Demo run on a computer emulator

Unity vs Customization

If you want a solid, totally self-contained operating system, user interface & device, you will want iOS devices. iOS has the extreme advantage that it is VERY well controlled by Apple and is solidly structured. The limit is in form factor. Apple has taken a one size fits all approach to smartphones that is in many ways very limiting. It has a unified experience strait out of the box., but if you are into customization and changing things then Android is for you. Android is also solid in structure, but it is looser in that it allows for customization. The customization of Android is AMAZING! You can so many things to streamline your phone to make it unique you both internally and externally.

Fragmentation

You may hear the word "Fragmentation" used when in relation to Android. Those who mention it are mostly talking heads. Android provides a solid and unique experience. Some phone makers are better at keeping their phones up-to-date over others (HTC being among the best), but Apple suffers from fragmentation as well. Fragmentation is defined as the user experiences degenerating or fragmenting over time or due to customization. The original iPhone can't sent picture messages (mms). The 3G can't do things the 3GS can do. The 3GS can't do things the 4 can do and the iPhone 4 can't do things the iPhone 4S can do. The more up-to-date the hardware is the more likely you are to get the best and brightest experience. So pick based off of customization rather than fragementation and you won't go wrong. In both cases the newer and "faster" the hardware the better. At the time of this writing the iPhone 4S runs a dual core processor. The majority of high end Android devices do as well. It is interesting to note that there are an increasing number of Android devices that are running Quad core processors as well. As an example, ASUS released the Transformer Prime, which ran the first mass produced quad core processor consumer electronics device over 4 months before Apple released the iPad 3 (or the New iPad as Apple calls it).

Application Choice

It has been said by some that the iPhone (and iOS) has better apps. This is not true. The selection of apps for both Android and iOS is about on par. As of this writing iTunes says they have over 500,000 apps and Android has somewhere in the range of 600,000. But this is just numbers. The real separation for the two major app stores is cost. For iOS Apps, expect to pay a little more. There are free apps, yes, but to fully take advantage of iOS you will need to buy at least a few apps. That being said, most applications arrive for iOS first and then are released to Android. We can see this in popular games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope. Still, these games are now available on Android, so it isn't an end all issue if you wait just a little bit. Further more, many developers are now releasing apps for both operating systems simultaneously since both have demonstrated themselves to be solid operating systems.

The quality of the applications is the key, and Android & iOS both have plenty of those with more on the way. Another thing that separates Android from iOS though is that there are several Android market places including the Google Play Store, GetJar and my personal favorite is the Amazon Appstore. The last one gives away one paid app every 24 hours. From games to customization apps to productivity apps you can get a ton of stuff for no money at all. I do recommend purchasing apps through the Amazon Appstore because they are competitive with the other stores AND developers get a little more money for their work. And considering that the average developing companies are small businesses who invest at least $50,000 into making said app this is a very good thing. Another selling point for the Amazon Appstore is the ability to use the same app multiple times on multiple devices. For example, since my wife has an Android phone as well, we can both use the Amazon app store apps on our phones without having to double purchase and having issues of sharing info from our individual calenders or contacts (an issue we encountered with sharing the same Android marketplace purchases). You can do the same with the Google Play store, but you have to be sure to turn off syncing of other information such as apps and calender information.

Android offers a large variety of form factors.
See all 3 photos Android offers a large variety of form factors. With the introduction of the iPhone 5, Apple now offers 2 options for form factor, but they really are basically the same.

Hardware

The issue of hardware is huge for both phone and tablet types. Apple has an advantage because they have a TON of control over the hardware. BUT you are limited to one screen size. One type of keyboard (on screen, not physical) unless you buy a special case for your phone. Also, if you buy an older iPhone or iPad, you are limited by the older hardware. The more up-to-date the better. The iOS devices are wonderful, but one size does not fit all.

Android has the opposite issue. Too much choice. I have a few suggestions to make sure you have a good experience with Android here. First, anything less than 1Ghz for the processor is not worth your time. This is considered mid-range for Android devices. That being said, go dual core or quad core if you can! Don't worry too much about whether the phone as a 1, 1.2 or 1.5 Ghz processor. This is important, but not nearly as important as RAM. Try to have at least 512MB of RAM or higher. 1GB of RAM is the best. The higher end devices are better. The extra cost is worth it. The cheap phones are cheap for a reason. Steer clear of those.

The iPhone is really easy to use. It is something that is simple almost to distraction. Most of the time the iPhone experiences is more about form than function. It is beautiful, but not for me. Still, out of box it works very nicely and you are guaranteed a unified experience from it.

Still, Android devices are also easy to use. In some ways they are more complicate than the iPhone, but we are talking about more complicated like getting a water bottle out of the refrigerator is more complicated than being handed one. There isn't much of a difference. The question here is do you want to customize or not? If you like having your phone be unique then Android is definitely for you. You don't have to customize, but if you like to, this is the device for you. Heck, you can leave it as is and it still is very nice. In either case, just remember that the super cheap Android devices are just that, cheap. Go for high end or at least midrange Android phones if you want quality. If you were to get and iPhone you are looking at at least $200 invested. Think about the same for investing in your Android phone. Things are trending towards cheaper Android phones that are high quality, but it isn't there yet. If you spend the same amount of money on an Android phone as you would on an iPhone you will make up the cost in cost of applications.

The thing that will really make the difference for you is actually using these devices. Be warned, if you get a fanboy for one or the other showing it to you, you will hear tons of arguments for one and against the other. The most important question you should ask yourself is "Does it fit what I WANT in my smartphone?" If you don't like the feel, be honest with yourself and go towards the one that works best.

How it all began

Writing articles using cell phone technology was only a dream many years ago, heck cell phones themselves were just a dream in some little young prodigy's mind from yesteryear.

So when it emerged onto the scenes, it was a true amazing event indeed, I'm sure everyone who's old enough to remember back before cell phones were invented, them good ole beaper's, and them huge car phones (The real mobile phones, where that cool name originated from). Remember that!

The trouble that technology poses to many non-technical people today, and especially those folks new to smart phones, is that there's to much to focus on at once, so when we learn something on them, it's like a huge discovery as if we found something no one ever has before, like when Benjamin Franklin first discovered how to redirect the flow of electricity, with his kite electrical storm experiment.

The Cellphone Epiphany

How it all happened to me one day is, I was siting in the car on a bright summer afternoon thinking to myself, "What can I do with my cell phone". I can no longer afford to pay the bill to get the internet on it or send/receive calls, and without a wireless WiFi connection. All I could do is use it at home from my home's internet connection, pretty much my smart phone has become just a miniature camera (like in the old 007 James bond movies), as well as a video camera whenever I leave my house, "What a bummer!".

So I thought, well maybe if I had a word processing program of sorts, my phone could instantly be put to good use after all. Maybe just maybe I could possibly write a powerful article, while waiting for my wife, when she was shopping at the Gap clothing store on that ultra scorching hot summer day.

So, what I did, I broke out my trusty old
Android HTC Hero smart phone, I looked to see if the traffic cops weren't around, because I didn't want to get a ticket for parking illegally, while writing an article on my cell phone (I was parked temporarily at a no parking zone, go figure! with the hazard light on, at that).

Next I proceeded to my gmail account, now what made me think of doing that, who knows right. I thought to myself again, "Self, there must be a way to write, and compose an article with this cool gmail account, even though I had no internet to connect to, and no clue if it was at all possible."

The light bulb lit

Once this thought came to mind, I then decided to find a way to compose my article, even though I never ever done so on a cell phone. I struck the menu button, and next thing you know, I found a compose option thereafter. That's when the light bulb lit in my overly technical mind, and thought "Man oh man I'm on to something now."

I soon began to start typing profusely, and when I came up for air, I began to also look for a way to save the email I just created. "Ahah!" I then located the save tab on the bottom of the gmail compose screen, and walla it was done.

Arriving Home Safe

As soon as I made it home safe, from driving through the hectic rush hour traffic, I proceeded to place the car in park. Next I was determined to test out my theory of sorts, and taught myself how to locate that cool draft of an email file, by pressing the menu button once again, I got puzzled for a second or two.

Than this time however to locate the email file, I had to use some high powered thoughts, (Maybe I needed a helmet to wear, just in case something hit me while the car was in park). So it took a drop of luck, and slight technical skill to actually find that darn file, I actually guessed it, by simply pressing the folders tab option. (I didn't use the cell phone while driving neither, because that's against the law and highly dangerous.)

One more thing

Oh, I almost forgot, hit the send onscreen option, once you figure out how to access that saved email, and after your home wireless network comes on, since you should be in range, that's if you actually have wireless Wifi signals or even a internet access at home.

This new age technology is really unique, so when something as intense as this occurs to you, as what occurred to me here with my cell phone, you will begin to realize that there's much more than meets the eye.

The other thing about it all is when a person needs to make ends meet, they will find ways to make it happen, and that's when improvisation occurs in most cases.

Note: (To all drivers worldwide)

Please be advised not to park illegally anywhere or you may be facing a serious driving violation, and a huge ticket especially in New York City. Oh and never text on a cell phone while driving. (I only do it while in the parked position, at an official parking location mostly).

So if you get caught using your cell phone while driving, it may mean huge fines as well, just don't text and drive its against the law, and please be wise, don't talk on your cell phone while driving because there's some pretty heavy fines for that one, as well.

Here's the steps and how to do it all in a cool video I made, enjoy!

0 Where to Download Android Apps

Android Marketplaces

  • Google Play
  • Amazon Appstore
  • AppBrain
  • OnlyAndroid
  • FDroid

Where to find Android apps is a question often asked by those bored of the official Google marketplace or the one operated by one's own mobile provider. There are a surprising number of places across the Web where one can purchase and download a variety of apps not available in the official stores. In fact, this is one the great benefits of using an Android device over that of an iOS device. Below is a brief list of five of the most popular marketplaces on the Internet.

Google Play

The first stop for any Android user should be Google Play. Previously, Google operated the Android Market and Google Music services separately. It has now brought those two services together. The rebranded service also provides access to digitally-distributed movies and books. The appstore might not include every Android app in existence, but it does provide access to the largest single collection.

Amazon

Amazon launched a marketplace for Android in March 2011 with a small collection of 3,600 apps. In a little more than a year, the Amazon Appstore has grown to include thousands of apps across an array of genres. They also operate a daily special in which users can download a paid app for free. While it does not quite rival Google Play, it is quickly becoming a popular stop for Android users.

AppBrain

AppBrain is one of the best independent Android marketplaces, and it can provide some interesting finds not found in Google's official store. The store comes in two varieties as a website and as an app. Users can search through the large database and narrow down the results by genre and Android version. AppBrain provides a nice alternative to Google Play.

OnlyAndroid

OnlyAndroid is an app store operated by MobiHand. MobiHand has been involved in selling and distributing mobile apps since 2004. Their website provides an easy to use interface for finding any kind of apps which you require.

FDroid

FDroid is unique in that it is a marketplace for Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). They do not provide a wide variety of apps, but the apps are provided freely in the tradition of FOSS. If open source is your thing, then FDroid is definitely the place for you.

Word of Caution

As one commenter, Andrew Pecinovsky, has pointed out, it is always wise to proceed with caution when downloading apps from untrusted sources. I would even extend that to trusted sources.

0 The Best Apps for Animal Lovers (iPhone and Android)

My name is Brittany and I am obsessed with animals.

And not just my two wonderful pups, Fiona and Penny, but all animals. Most of my life centers on animals in some wayI read about them, write about them, tweet about them, and advocate for their welfare. Oh, and Im a vegetarian. When Im not at my day job, Im playing with my dogs, or volunteering at the SPCA Serving Erie County, Soi Dog Foundation USA, Brightstar GSD Rescue, among others.

I just cant get enough! So it should be no surprise that my iPhone is loaded with animal- and pet-related apps. I figured if Im going to spend the money on the iPhone and Verizons soul-crushing monthly data plan, I might as well take advantage of as many (free) apps as I can. You may be thinking, Thats great; why dont you just make a Facebook page for your dogs and pretend to be them, since youre so obsessed? Too late, I already have.

But seriously: there are some really useful apps available on both the iOS and Android platforms that can make your life as a pet-parent a little bit easier.

Some of my favorites, in no particular order:

MapMyDOGWALK
See all 5 photos MapMyDOGWALKSource: PetnTek

MapMyDOGWALK by MapMyFitness, Subaru

Let me begin by saying that I have been using the MapMyFitness platform for a couple of years now and I love that they have created the free, super easy-to-use MapMyDOGWALK app. If youre unfamiliar with MapMyFitness, here is a brief overview:

After creating a free membership, you log your workouts by mapping your route. You can make your route map as simple or as detailed as youd like, with options to add details about the terrain, the distance you covered, the time it took, the type and purpose of the workout. Did you walk, run, jog, or cycle? Was the activity for exercise or leisure? What was the terrain like? For whom is this route suited? When did you complete the route?

You can save your routes and reuse them if you complete them again on another day (great for those of us who train using the same routes a couple times per week). If you want to use the same route but are getting tired of the same routine, check out some ways to mix up your workout here.

The MapMyDOGWALK app syncs all of this information to your phone, allowing you to log new workouts and dog walks. Take your phone with you on your walkthis app also acts as a stopwatch for timing your route, and it will monitor your route through Live Tracking. You can also sync it up to different sensors to monitor your heart rate, bike cadence, bike speed, bike power, and stride.

I complete as many Challenges through this app as I can: Challenges motivate me to keep me movingright now Im completing 50 miles in 30 daysand ensure that my pups get enough exercise, too.

5 stars for MapMyDOGWALK PETA App Action Alert Center

PETA by PETA

Help Animals with the Touch of a Finger

The free mobile app by PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) allows the animal rights activist on the go to speak out against animal cruelty while well, on the go. This app alerts users to cruelty against animals and gives them the option to take action against cruelty as well as share alerts through Facebook and Twitter. Its really easy to use: with the touch of a button, the PETA app composes an e-mail to your congressmen, local government officials, or the relevant person or institution on your behalf, then sends you an e-mail alert to thank you for speaking up against a particular animal-cruelty issue. Every time you take action on an alert, you earn ten points; if you make a donation to PETA, which you can also do through this app, you earn fifty points. Points equal badgesmy PETA Rank is currently Ensign Elephant.

While I have no idea what that means, nor do I think the points or badges actually do anything, its nice to know that social media has made things a little simpler to speak up for animals who cant do so for themselves.

iKibble Free by Llamaface

I love this adorable (and free) app! Its especially useful for pet parents whose puplike mineeats anything and everything (and was, in fact, created by a couple pet parents who had the same problem with their pup).

If your pup has gotten hold of something he shouldnt have, and you werent quick enough to stop him from eating it, this app allows you to search for that food item; you can then see if it is safe for your pet to consume, or if you should be concerned that your pet ate it. The app will also let you know if certain parts of a food are okay for your pet to ingest: for example, apples get a 5-bone rating (meaning theyre super healthy for your best friend), but the app warns that apple seeds are toxic to your pet. Only the flesh and skin, please!

You can also browse the extensive list of foods and star your favorites. Luckily, all the foods that my pets really lovelike apples, bananas, and peanut butterare actually pretty good for them. Some foods will offer you neat tips for turning that item into a treat for your dog: try stuffing a toy with peanut butter, freezing the whole thing, and then offering it to your dog as a yummy source of fun.

One thing thats a little off-putting: at the bottom of each food, you can touch the Doggy Opinion Sound button to hear a pup sound of approval (or disapproval). The sound for an unapproved food is a little creepyit sounds like a pup squealing in pain or crying which makes me wonder where they obtained it.

Heart of the Ark Cards for iPhone
See all 5 photos Heart of the Ark Cards for iPhoneSource: Apple iTunes

Heart of the Ark Cards by True North Productions

This app, based on Belinda Recios study of animals symbolism in society, was created to support animal welfare: according to a post on LinkedIn, Recio donates 5 percent of the proceeds from this app to the Humane Society of the United States.

Heart of the Ark is worth the $2.99 not just for animal lovers, but also lovers of literature and mythology, as well as history buffs. This app allows users to experience animals from symbolic and totemic perspectives; it includes an interactive deck of Ark Cards that each features a beautifully-illustrated animal along with its natural history and sociocultural symbolism. The cards also provide ways to incorporate an animals meaning into your life as a way of exploring the world around you. The app includes a Field Journal, too, which allows you to record your own encounters and experiences with animals, then import additional information from that animals Ark Card.

While this app may seem too New Age for some, I enjoy it because the artwork is truly beautiful, and the information and stories accompanying each card provide excellent points for further inquiry, research, and creativity.

Petcentric by Nestle Purina

petcentric by Nestle Purina Petcare Co.

Another free app, petcentric is like a Yelp! for dogs. The home screen has options to browse pet-friendly lodging, parks and beaches, and restaurants, and provides information on traveling with pets, pet services, and pet-related events. You can do a search in any of these categories using your zip code or city and state; plus, you can add pet-friendly places to the list and even browse (or submit your own) photos and videos of locations and the furry clientele who frequent them.

Info screen on My Dog.
See all 5 photos Info screen on My Dog.

My Dog by Dog Info USA LLC $1.99

This app is worth the $1.99 because it allows you to keep all of your pets (or pets') vital information in one place. You can enter lots of basic information about your pet, like her name, birthday, weight, and breed, as well as info on her veterinarian, vaccinations, medications, nutrition schedule, and recent and upcoming vet visits.

One feature that I truly appreciate is the ability to enter your dogs microchip ID number and the phone number for the microchip company. There have been a couple of times when Penny has run off and I was unable to call the company that monitors her microchip because the ID number and company phone number are attached to a tag on her collar. Having this information on hand could save your dogs lifeits also a constant reminder to set up an appointment for my vet to microchip Fiona!

If you forget when your pet took what, this app can keep you apprised of your pets current health. It also allows you to e-mail stored information to your veterinarian or other facility, like a boarding facility or dog daycare, that would require your pets medical history.

Apps for the Android

I have an iPhone so I havent used these apps; however, Ive researched them and read reviews so that I could provide a couple of suggestions for Android users who are looking for unique animal-related apps.

Pet First Aid by Jive Media, Inc. $2.99 (Also available on iOS platform)

Photos, videos, and step-by-step instructions guide you through pet first aid procedures that could save your dog or cats life when you need to act fast for your pets safety.

Fido Pet Adoptions (Android) by Politainment

This free app lets you search for adoptable pets both in your area and nationwideperfect for the future pet owner who wants to rescue a shelter dog rather than buy from a breeder.

52 Dog Tricks (Android) by itsRu

Teach your dog a new trick each week with this cool free app. You start out by learning how to teach your pet to respond to a training clicker (which really works!); then, you work with your pet on a new trick every week. The app provides some very useful tips and advice to help your pet learn each new trick. I wish this one were available for the iPhone!

Pets Next Door (Android) by Animal Compass Org.

Looking for a playmate for your pet? This app will connect you with pets in your area. Share your pets photo and story with local pets and pet parentsscope out a park where you can meet using petcentric, and you just might end up with the perfect play-date!
