0 Android App Update Installation Error - Troubleshoot the LG Optimus V

If you have ever opened your Android phone to find that you have a new notification for an application update in the Android Market and on trying to update this application get the dreaded triangle with the exclamation mark in the middle error notice, then this article is for you.

On more than one occasion, I have received the error message saying that the update failed. Even worse, I often click on the failure notification to find that the market's final word on what caused the error is "unknown". Big help!

This mostly became an issue when I upgraded to the LG Optimus V, which runs Android's Froyo 2.2 operating system. My previous phone, the Samsung Intercept, ran Android Eclair 2.1 operating system.

One huge difference between these two system versions is the ability to move a portion of an apps required memory space to the microSD card, which allows you to save space in the internal memory of the phone.

Solution One - Moving Day

This Apps2SD feature is great, but I've discovered that it comes with an updating complication. I came to this conclusion through trial and error because it was not mentioned anywhere I could see in the market or in any of my "move this app to the sd card" apps.

If you own the LG Optimus V and you try to update an app that has been moved to the microSD card, it may fail. This will not happen in every case, as technically, it is not supposed to do this according to Lifehacker.

You must move the app back to the phone, update, and then move it back to the microSD card.

Solution Two - Re-Education

Another solution is to clear your Market's cache and data. The cache is easy enough, and you might have an app that already will do that for you like my favorite Accleaner.

You have to make sure, however, that you clear the data too, which you can find by pressing the menu button on the home screen and then pick Applications > Manage Applications > All > Market and then "clear data".

Finally, see if your data sweep worked by trying to update the app again. If its still a no go, then you need "Solution Three".

Solution Three - Clean Slate

Sometimes, no matter what you try, an app will fail to install an update.

In this situation, the best way to deal with the uncooperative app is to just uninstall the app completely and reinstall it.

Uninstalling it first is key.

Do not overwrite it, uninstall it.
