There are only two kinds of tablets...

There are only two kinds of tablet PCs out there: tablets that run Android 4.0, and tablets that don't. Google's latest build of the Android OS, nicknamed Ice Cream Sandwich is going to be the going-forward trend in tablets, and hasn't stopped generating buzz since its release last October.

Not convinced that ICS is the platform of the future? There are a few lesser-known companies out there who aim to transform the tablet from a luxury toy of the business-class to a household item within the reach of regular, good-hearted working folk. And they're doing it with Ice Cream Sandwich. So you don't have to break the bank to stay on top of the latest tech trends.

Below, I've put together a top-five list of high-end Android tablets running 4.0 that are all under $200.

Ainol Novo 7 Paladin

Those looking to get the most bang for their buck might start looking with the
Ainol Novo 7 Paladin. It's a full-blooded, fleshed-out Android tablet; not some stripped-down knock-off piece of plastic. It has very decent specs for the money: a capacitive screen, a full gig of RAM, and a 1GHz processor. That said, it's not the biggest, baddest thing on the block, but dollar-for-dollar, a smart first-time tablet.

Ainol Novo 7 Paladin Review

ZeniThink ZT280 C71

Those who like the sleek, borderless looks of Samsung's P1000 will find something to love about the
ZeniThink ZT280 C71. It shares a similar motif; everything has been trimmed to a super-smooth glass surface with near-invisible borders. The screen is seven inches diagonally. At 800 by 480 pixels, it's not quite high-def, but it supports HDMI.

Onda VX610W

If you like watching movies, take a look at the Onda VX610W. The device feels like it was made for movie playback. It supports practically any movie file type you can throw at it, and supports HDMI playback and output in resolutions well above 1080p. Even the overall design of it reminds me of devices marketed solely as portable movie players; it's squarish and boxy. With standard models coming with a whole 16GB of storage, the VX610W is practically begging to be used in a way similar to an Android TV box, which gives you a neat and trendy way to take your movies with you to your friends' houses, parties, and the like.

Ainol Novo 7 Aurora

A big step up from what we've looked at so far is the Novo 7 Paladin's big brother, the Ainol Novo 7 Aurora. I recently reviewed the Aurora, and I was impressed most by its ultra-sharp, 5-point multi-touch IPS screen. Those letters IPS are a big deal if you're a stickler for image quality; the viewing angles are wider and the colors more vivid on an IPS screen. At seven inches, the Aurora rivals the Motorola XOOM in quality, hardware, and HD playback. It should be able to handle even the most resource-intensive apps, like games, with ease.

Onda Vi10 Elite

I saved the best for last. The Onda Vi10 Elite is truly elite, and in my opinion the best-performing tablet under $200. It's got the requisite full gig of RAM and 1GHz processor, but also with a dedicated GPU for high-end graphics. The Elite runs so smooth and the true-HD 1080p capacitive screen looks so sharp, you might expect the contents of the screen to spill out into your lap. It also supports HDMI output and handles big apps and loads YouTube videos like a dream. I don't know about you, but I don't mind springing a bit of extra cash if I can stay under budget and get the most performance for my buck, and I believe the Elite delivers.
