A new year means a new year in apps, and mobile gaming apps in particular. The mobile gaming industry is expected to be worth $18 billion by 2014, a rise of 16.6 per cent since 2009, according to Pyramid Research, Inc. This means you can expect to see a lot more companies entering the market in the year ahead and a lot more great games in turn. Here we take a look at some of the most exciting games coming in the months ahead, from some of the trail-blazing companies that have led way in the mobile gaming industry over the last 12 months, including Chillingo (Cut the Rope, Storm the Train, Totem Runner) and Thumbstar Media (The Adorables, Cave Diver. Talking Photo Booth). You might expect after the mass roll out of smartphones and tablets in the lead up to Christmas, with the debut of the Surface, Nexus 10, iPad mini and the surprise release of the iPad with Retina display.

1. FRIDGE WORDS

If last year was about guessing your friends doodles in Draw Something and naming tunes on SongPop, this year may well be about trying to spell words the fastest. Fridge Words is a multiplayer game in which players form words within a time limit using fridge magnets. To complicate matters, there are bonus letters and various power ups to help you get ahead.

ShadowRun is part magical fantasy, part sci-fi. It has spawned four video games since 1994 across classic consoles including the SNES. Sega Mega Drive, Xbox 360 and PC. The latest version is coming to Android tablet and iPad. Funded on Kickstarter, this tactical RPG is hotly anticipated for its imaginative story and complex gameplay.

3.Wake The Cat

Wake The Cat is an adorable pussycat puzzle game from Chillingo. the makers of previous hits including Cut the Rape and Storm the Train. The object of this new game is to wake a kitten from her dreams of fish by experimenting with meticulously designed contraptions. Fling the yarn across the room and use toy trains, portal slippers, fans and more to help guide the yarn to the dozing feline.

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour

The first-person shooter for iPhone and iPad is finally here, and it is up to you to track down and rescue the leaders of the world from terrorists. Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour features a new tactical movement system, allowing the gamer to dominate the battlefield. You get to fight across the globe in 13 different missions, playing both as the hero and the villain. The game also offers life like and console-like graphics, and is the first game from Gameloft to be powered by the Havok Engine, which delivers the most realistic-feeling vehicles ever. Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour also features a fully redesigned multiplayer mode, with over 20,000 weapon arrangements and a new ranking system for the Ieaderboards.
